1. a protein substance produced in the blood or tissues of animals or man that destroys or weakens bacteria or neutralizes the poisons they produce. An antibody is formed in response to some specific antigen, and reacts with or neutralizes that antigen. Antibodies are named according to the type of their activity and include antitoxins, hemolysins, agglutinins, and precipitins.
2. a substance whose action opposes that of some other substance.
